Here is a comprehensive list of all of the significant accomplishments made by Congress this year.

1. Federal Minimum Wage went from $5.15 to $5.85. (Not really significant but I had to put something here!)

  1. Andy, you should be intelligent enough to know that without 60 votes in the Senate, nothing gets done.

  2. Andy,

While I don't always (seldom) agree with you, I respect that you have core beliefs that you stick to. What I don't respect is that you are often intellectually dishonest. This is one of those cases. To say that only one piece of Democratic agenda was passed is a lie. You might not agree with the content of these bills, but they are very real and were passed.

Pay-As-You-Go: I know that Republicans are not big on the whole fiscal responsibility thing, but Democrats have returned the concept to Washington.

Lobbyist Ethics Reform. I know how republicans love lobbyist gifts and travel. Not allowed anymore.

Veterans Health: the largest funding increase in history. Look what happened at Walter Reed under Republican stewardship.

Iraqi Benchmarks: Benchmarks for the Iraqi government and a requirement for the President to report progress in the War or begin a responsible redeployment of the troops.

You see, the list goes on and on. Keep imagining to yourself that there was just one thing and then you can wonder what the hell happened in 2008.

  3. Shane,

I disagree with you on being intellectually dishonest. I left these out because I didn't think any of these as being of any significance.

Pay As You Go: Will it really be enforced? I doubt it. Politicians of all stripes love to spend our money and hate to cut programs. They will find a way to work around it.

Lobbyist Ethics Reform: Dems love lobbyist gifts too. Again, will it really be enforced?

Veterans Health: Socialized healthcare at it's best. Let's socialize it some more.

Iraqi Benchmarks: What? I thought the Dems were going to get us out immediately!

  4. Yeah, the Democrats are completely unlike the last Republican Congress:

1/4/07 ~ Democrats Pass Strong New Ethics Rules and Earmark Reform

1/9/07 ~ Democratic Congress passed the Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act of 2007, legislation that implements recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission

1/23/07 ~ Democrats Unanimously Pass Legislation to Bar Pensions for Corrupt Congressmen

5/15/07 ~ Passed the COPS Improvements Act of 2007, a bill to put 50,000 new cops police officers on the beat

5/24/07 ~ Passed the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 stopping the GOP practice of leaving Congress and becoming instant lobbyists

5/24/07 ~ Democratic Congress Passes the First Minimum Wage Increase in a Decade

5/24/07 ~ Democratic Congress Passes Tax Relief for Small Businesses

5/21/07 ~ Passed the 21st Century Competitiveness Act of 2007 providing for investing in math and science teachers and incentives for young scientists and engineers

5/23/07 ~ Pass Legislation to Combat OPEC Price Gouging and Price Fixing

5/16/07 ~ Democrats passed a 3.5 % pay raise for our troops despite Bush's opposition

5/17/07 ~ Passed a Veterans funding bill that would increase funding for the veterans benefits by $6.7 billion and also rejected the administration’s attempts to increase fees and co-payments in veterans’ health programs

5/24/07 ~ Democratic Congress voted for an emergency supplemental funding package that included $1.8 billion for veterans' programs, including $1.3 billion for veterans' health programs and $444 million for Veterans'Affairs administration

6/7/07 ~ Passed the Stem Cell Enhancement Act, a bill that increased the number of embryonic stem cell lines eligible for federally funded research

    **************************
Of course the Kool-Aid drinking Bush cultists don't like to recognize most of these because so much of the Dems work has been to undo the damage done by the GOP Congress which was more interested in covering up Bush incompetence, malfeasance and criminality (while protecting sexual predators among their ranks) than in doing the nation's true business.
